Re: the doula link: I used a doula for pregnancy/birth and I think they are invaluable as a resource. But, really, the need for doulas is about the fact that women do not have enough support for any reproductive event or experience. Women don’t have enough people that they feel safe talking to no matter what they’re going through. It’s a sad commentary on gendered reproductive experiences and the lack of close ties among women, I think. We probably need doulas for menstruation, menopause, infertility, cancer experiences, etc. I know I resist the urge to call up my doula now when I have to deal with random bodily things….even though I am way past needing her help/support with pregnancy or birth….
