Jane Lynch just gave us another reason to join her fan club. Interviewed on the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globe event, in addition to being asked about her outfit and jewelry, Lynch was asked what was in her bag. She replied, “My invitation, a little bit of lipstick, and a tampon.” The (male) interviewer chuckled and responded, “Are you feeling lucky tonight?” Check out her reply in the video clip at the left.
(I am bit disappointed that she wasn’t planning to make the same announcement if/when she won the award . . . )

I adore her for saying this. I wonder if her announcing from the podium that she’s menstruating is on par with Cameron keeping us posted on his urinating schedule. She’s far more charming about it, but it’s not THAT different.
I love it! She’s fantastic on Glee. Doesn’t it seem like menstruation is coming out of the closet? Big time? And how wonderful that we have re:cycling to bring all the buzz together in one place so we can witness, discuss, argue, learn, inform and ruminate on all things menstrual.
Therese, did James Cameron really talk about his urination schedule on the podium?!? I didn’t actually watch the Golden Globes (never been big on awards shows), but I do think there are pretty substantive differences between talking about urination and talking about menstruation. Different levels of stigma, different social perceptions, etc. If Cameron did talk about peeing, there are many who would regard it as inappropriate; if Lynch talked about menstruating on the podium, many would regard her as inappropriate and dirty.
Laura, thank you so much for saying that about re:Cycling! Your comments are an important part of this site.
You’re so right especially when it comes to men and their pee. They think it’s cute, like their farts.
When he won his first Golden Globe, Cameron opened his speech by saying he had to pee really badly (I guess he didn’t want to be in the loo when his name was called). When he won his second GG, he told everyone that he had gotten a chance to pee in the interim. Whew. Because we were worried.
As much as I liked Avatar (and I really did) I find the man himself insufferable. Now Jane Lynch, on the other hand, strikes me as someone who can say any damn thing she pleases and it’s hilarious. I totally celebrate the celebration of her Lady Power!
Oversharing came in threes, by the way. Did you catch Mo’Nique hiking up her dress to show everyone her very hairy legs?
It IS great that she said what she did, but isn’t it interesting that she managed to make sure we knew she was still young and therefore (thankfully) not menopausal yet? It’s good to know she is still a woman because, we wouldn’t want her to be menopausal….or aging!
Yeah, I picked up on that, too, Heather. But I was so pleased to see the open acknowledgment of menstruation without shame that I’m willing to overlook that (for now). I just remind myself that she’s in a business that is particularly unkind to aging women.
I agree but….I can’t help feeling like she could have left that comment out. I just think about all of the menopausal women out there who are probably her same age, who were sitting there watching….and there are plenty of women much older than her hanging on in that profession and still doing fine. This is just one of those situations where we could say, “Great job on getting menstruation out there! We love you! BUT, did you have to stick that comment about aging in there?”
