• There were a couple of posts in the feminist blogosphere this week in defense of period sex. Apparently heterosexual men need to be reminded from time to time.
  • This story about a nightmarish experience going off hormonal contraceptives has been making the rounds lately.
  • An article in Wednesday’s New York Times — in the Fashion & Style section, natch —  reminds us ladyfolk over 35 that although whitening our teeth, dyeing our hair, and botoxing our faces may make us look young and fertile, we are neither.
  • There’s some buzz in the tattoo community online and off (and elsewhere, too) about the upcoming launch of Garage magazine, for a whole lot of reasons. The New York Times calls the debut issue “one of the most intriguing magazines to come along in years, it is not entirely clear whether this is a fashion magazine that takes more than a passing interest in art, or an art magazine that knows its stuff about fashion.” Marisa Kakoulas of the premier tattoo blog Needles & Sins says “the magazine seems to know its stuff about tattoos as well.” So why do we care here at re:Cycling? Well, one of the reasons for all the buzz is the image of a butterfly tattoo on a young woman’s genitalia. You’ll have to buy the magazine to see the actual image, but if the reports I’ve read are correct, the photographer needed a speculum to photograph it. That’s right: Nearly every article I’ve seen about this particular butterfly tattoo says it is on the model’s vagina. I’d like to refer a few bloggers (and maybe some copy editors) to this link from Persephone magazine two weeks ago: Vagina and vulva: Two different things, both awesome. [P.S. Sorry, Marisa — I still love your work!]
